Slaying Goliath. Action is the enemy of procrastination!
“A perfect method of adding drama to life is to wait until the deadline looms large” -Alyce Cornyn-Selby. Today, I’m taking a lighthearted look at some of the creative ways we convince ourselves that postponing a task is not procrastination, but rather a smart strategy. Let’s face it, while creative excuses to procrastinate may be tempting, it’s time to stop delaying the inevitable and start taking action.
First on the list: cleaning.
Yes, you read that right. Cleaning can be a procrastinator’s best friend. You know that report due tomorrow? Better dust the bookshelves first. That email you’ve been putting off? Let’s scrub the toilet bowl instead. And don’t forget the classic: “I can’t focus in a messy environment, so cleaning is actually a productive activity!”
Next up: snacking.
When in doubt, eat. And eat some more. Whether it’s browsing through the fridge or ordering takeout, snacking can provide the perfect distraction from the task at hand. Bonus points if you convince yourself that you need the energy boost to tackle the task later. Spoiler alert: you won’t.
Another classic procrastination technique: research.
You know that project you’ve been avoiding? Time to become an expert on the topic. You can spend hours browsing through articles, watching videos, and taking notes. And before you know it, it’s midnight and you still haven’t started the project. But hey, at least you’re knowledgeable now, right?
Let’s not forget about social media.
Checking your phone every 5 minutes is not procrastination, it’s multitasking. You can catch up on the latest memes, scroll through your friends’ feeds, and even network with potential clients. Because who needs to work when you can chat with strangers on Social Media?
How about this one: napping.
Yes, napping. Some like to nap, because sometimes you just need to recharge your batteries before you can tackle that to-do list. And what better way to do that than by taking a quick snooze? It’s science, right? A well-rested procrastinator is a productive procrastinator.
Finally, my personal favorite: organization.
Let’s get organized! Well sometimes, you just need to declutter your mind and your space before you can tackle that to-do list. You start clearing your desk and moving around the piles of paper, telling yourself that a clean workspace will help you focus better. And then, before you know it, you’ve spent hours reorganizing your files, color-coding with highlighters, and alphabetizing your sticky notes. Meanwhile, that looming deadline is still hanging over your head. But hey, at least you’re organized now, right?
While this was good-humored, procrastination does have its serious side. It causes anxiety and stress, which is not healthy, so it’s a habit worthy of getting under control. I’m guilty of a few, research being the worst. There are many good blogs out there on how to overcome procrastination. Get “specific” in your search and key in on what might work for you and your personality type. There’s no one size fits all. Keep in mind, every small step towards action is a step away from procrastination.
Thanks for reading, and remember each new day begins with fresh grace and mercy!
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness”. ~ Lamentations 3:22-23

P.S. Bonus Tip:
As much as we may dread starting a task, sometimes all it takes is a 15-minute commitment to get the ball rolling. We all have those days where our motivation is lacking, but even during those moments, taking a small step forward can do wonders for our productivity. So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed by a large project, try breaking it down into smaller, manageable tasks. Don’t let procrastination hold you back from achieving your goals. Take action, even if it’s just a small step, and keep moving forward.
